Album Review: City And Colour - The Hurry And The Harm

Album Rating: B+
Sometimes when I listen to music, I like to ponder my favourite rock vocalists. Not only that, but I like to imagine the chosen ones having a sing off, or more accurately, a battle: crooning, shouting and screaming near indecipherable lyrics into each other’s faces until they’re slowly whittled down until only the finest survive. This probably isn’t normal, and I doubt it’s healthy either, nevertheless, the plethora of above average vocalists are chipped away to reveal an inevitable face-off between two men. Dallas Green, formerly of Alexisonfire fame, unleashes ethereal lullabies whilst Fair to Midland’s Darroh Sudderth bounces around melting faces and pretending to be a Viking - and it’s a hard fought outcome which is only decided by my mood.

Jukebox: City and Colour - Of Space and Time

Dallas Green might just possess my favourite singing voice of all time, and I know I’m not alone. Since the 2004 release of Watch Out! by the seminal Alexisonfire, Green has built a reputation as an angelic vocalist, so much so that it was no surprise to see him leave the brash post-hardcore heavyweights and begin a solo career that focused on soft acoustics and his key attribute; his voice. His solo releases thus far have undisputedly proved one thing - he doesn't need to be juxtaposed against the ferocious growls of former band-mate George Pettit in order to excel and amaze. A voice alone, however, wouldn't be enough to carry any artist, and fortunately Green possesses the song writing ability to confidently back it up.

Live Review: Death Cab For Cutie, Meadowbrook Music Theater (7/4/12)

July 4 is generally a day for barbecues, fireworks and reunions with old acquaintances to celebrate the greatest country on Earth- America. I chose to forgo most of the celebration, however, and have a decidedly less explosion-filled evening by attending the Death Cab for Cutie concert at the local college pavillion. Personally, I hate pavillion venues, especially when I get stuck with lawn seats as I did for this concert; luckily, the lawn made a minimal difference in the overall quality of my evening.
